For direct editing of MS Office files, there is the possibility to access the functionality of current versions of Windows, Internet Explorer and MS Office. Prerequisites for this approach are:
• Windows 7 or higher;
• Internet Explorer 9 or higher;
• Office 2010 or higher;
• the document is a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project or Visio file;
• the document has a valid file name extension on the BSCW server (e.g. '.doc' for a Word document).
• Furthermore, on the BSCW server
• WebDAV must be enabled (see 13.7 WebDAV)
If you have any questions, please contact your BSCW administrator.
If the prerequisites are met, edit an MS Office file directly on the BSCW server as follows.
• Select in the context menu of the document.
• This action locks the file and automatically starts the corresponding office application. The operation "Save" in the Office application writes the file back to the BSCW server. There the original file is replaced or, in case of documents under version control, a new version is created.
Note: Automatic locking during editing does not generate its own events and is not included in the document's history.
• The document is unlocked by closing the file in the Office application.
Note: If direct editing with the auxiliary application for external editors for MS Office files is enabled (see next section), this procedure has priority over the direct editing procedure described here.
