Manage versions

In BSCW you may access older versions of documents under version control by clicking on the version on the document's info page or by entering the URL directly.

Select  the context menu of the desired document.

The Info page of the document contains the Version History section and another Related Version Branches section if the document has version branches. The tables show creation date, author, state and change description for each version.

Click on the version number of the version you want to read or download.

You can also access an older version directly via URL - more on the procedure in general in 8.5 URLs for objects in workspaces. For documents under version control, the version number is appended to the address for normal documents as in the following example:

http://Ihr-BSCW-Server/sec/bscw.cgi/d12345/Bericht.doc?version=0.6

Attention: You can change older versions of a document under version control afterwards only if you branch from the version you want to edit and then edit the branch version.

If you not only want to display the different versions of a document, but also compare them with each other and possibly delete superfluous ones,

select  Versions in the context menu of the document. You will then see the version history with date, author, status and any change notes of all versions that can be deleted. Note that certain versions cannot be deleted for technical reasons, for example if they are the starting point of a version branch.

For text, HTML, and other documents that can be converted to text form, you can compare two versions of each before deleting. Select the two versions and click [Compare Versions]. The comparison of the two versions appears in the action form: new text is underlined, deleted text is crossed out.

Note: Which documents can be converted to text form depends on the document types for which your BSCW administrator has installed appropriate converters.

For deleting, select the version(s) you want to delete and carefully check that all versions you do not want to delete are also unchecked. Then click on [Delete versions]. Please note that deleted versions cannot be restored.

If you delete all versions of a document under version control, you thereby remove version control, i.e. the document becomes a normal document again.
