Other methods of authentication

The default authentication method for BSCW servers is the login to your web browser with username and password as described above. Make sure to use the BSCW server via HTTPS (a combination of HTTP and a cryptographic transport protocol) so that the communication of your browser with the BSCW server is encrypted. Ask your administrator about this possibility if HTTPS is not available at your BSCW (recognizable by the fact that your server address starts with https:// instead of http://).

However, your BSCW server may also be configured to allow completely different authentication methods. Especially methods that may also be used for other Web applications without having to remember different usernames and passwords each time or even without having to authenticate again when the application or Web site is changed (so-called single sign-on methods) come into question here. Alternative methods of authentication for your BSCW server are offered on the normal login form.

An example of a single sign-on method is OpenID, where authentication runs via a special identification service (so-called OpenID provider) with which you maintain an OpenID identity. If you see the OpenID icon OpenID on the BSCW login page, you may log in to BSCW using the URL of your OpenID provider.

Enter the URL of your OpenID provider into the corresponding field of the BSCW registration form. You may obtain an OpenID identity from one of the many OpenID providers. E.g. users with an account at Google may log in to BSCW using the URL https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id.

Afterwards, you will be asked by your OpenID provider to authenticate yourself. After that you are logged in to BSCW.

The main advantage of this procedure is that you are now logged in to all websites that allow OpenID. You can learn more about OpenID at https://openid.net/.
