Similar to an entry in a list of bookmarks or favorites in your Web browser, a URL object provides direct access to an object that is not located in the current folder but on the Web, on an FTP server or similar. A URL object may also be used to access a BSCW object in another folder on the same BSCW server (see 8.5).
You create a URL by typing
• click on in the top menu.
• In the 'General' tab of the action form, enter the address under 'URL'
(e.g. https://www.bscw.de/files/help-7.3/german/) and specify whether the
address should be saved as a reference or the document to which the address
refers. In the latter case, a local copy of the external document is created,
which you can access even if the original source is no longer available, e.g.
because the corresponding server is no longer running or the document has been
moved to another location.
Furthermore, you can give the URL object a name (by default, the last part
of the address is used as name) and optionally enter tag and description.
• Click [OK] to create the new URL.
A URL object has the following special actions in the context menu:
checks the URL for accessibility.
saves the contents of the document or object referenced by the URL in addition to the URL object in your workspace.
lets you rate the quality of the document or object referenced by the URL on a 5-point scale.
